CNPHS Historic Recognition Program

Historical Designation Plaques honor notable buildings associated with individuals, businesses, or institutions in our community. The Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society is solely responsible for their production and distribution. The plaques place no legal restrictions on the owner. Our goal is to raise awareness of the value of our local history.

Plaques are oval with a dark green background and etched precision tooled bronze. They have a protective clear coat for outdoor use, are 1/8” thick, and include mounting screws. The owner and CNPHS collaborate on the descriptive text in the center. Prices vary by size, are set by our supplier, and passed to you without a markup.

We recognize and deeply appreciate the many homes, buildings, and establishments that have lasted the many decades, and which deserve to be recognized.

Our Vision

Our vision for the Historic Designation Program is to expand the community of individuals who appreciate and enjoy exploring the interplay between buildings, culture, and history.  We meet every month to talk about local history and what we can do to awaken "the mystic chords of memory" (Abraham Lincoln) in the community.  Our Historic Designation Plaques are the first step in this process.

You can help realized our vision by placing a plaque on your home or place of business IF:

  • It Is associated with a noteworthy person, group, or event.

  • Its design is an example of a particular style or period, or outstanding architecture.

  • It is home to an individual or group committed to common good of our community.

  • It is valued part of our cultural, pollical, economic, or social history

For more information, email Ross Lumpkin, Trustee or call (516) 365-9074 and leave us a message. You may also like to join us at one of our meetings when we gather to talk about the interplay of buildings, culture, and history - and what we can do to awaken "the mystic chords of memory" in Port Washington.
