Essay Contest


Open to 4th and 5th Graders!

Port Washington has great historic landmarks!

Describe your reaction to a landmark that you have visited in Port Washington.

4th Graders: Describe your reaction to a landmark that you have visited in Port Washington

5th Graders: Why is it important to preserve our local history?

Write an essay, no longer than 300 words, that includes any special feelings you experienced during and after your visit.

The Sands-Willets house, the Dodge house, the Guggenheim Preserve, the Mill Pond, the Baxter Pond, the Sand Pits, the Town Dock, the Landmark on Main Street are sites that you may want to write about (or choose your own!).

Essays must be handed into your teacher or mailed to the Historical Society no later than June 10, 2009. Download the check lists for the 4th grade and the 5th grade (PDFs)

Please include your name, address, telephone number, grade, school, and your teacher’s name on the cover of your essay.

Prizes
First Place essays will be awarded a $100 United States Savings Bond.
Second Place essays will be awarded a $50 United States Savings Bond.

All entries will receive a certificate and a one year honorary membership to the Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society (www.cowneck.org).

Winners will be announced at the Historical Society’s Fall Fair, September 12, 2009
